Unique in Scotland, monthly Malecon Matinee celebrates the lovely "Buena Vista Social Club" Cuban Son, along with all the other kinds of Cuban music and dance.
We are passionate about Son, the rare but essential lovely heart of salsa.
We invite you to learn with Edinburgh's Cuban teachers.
Put the missing heart beat into your salsa: learn to dance "On4"
Now and then the class may be "something different" - eg Cha cha cha, Rueda etc
(See below for Youtube videos of Alejandro and Lily's Nov 2011 Son demo after the class, and August's impromptu Rueda class with Yamil and Lily.)
Combo entry to the class plus MM: £9. MM on its own or the class (on its own) £5.
Technically the Son music and dance goes "across the timing" ie "contra tiempo" - the steps are on 234 (and 678) with a strong emphasis on the 4th (and 8th) beats that are missed out in ordinary salsa. Son and the other traditional Cuban social dances are not found much in salsa clubs in the UK. Yet Son is widely acknowledged (eg Alex Wilson's "Find the Rhythm") to be the mother and core of all later salsa music. The debate in salsa is whether you dance On1 or On2. Like the Cubans, we say you can't understand either without Son or dancing "On4".
About the name, Malecon Matinee . . . "Malecon" comes from the famous Havana sea front; and Salsa Celtica's song was about ours, El Portobello Malecon. "Matinee" because there's music and dance all day in Cuba. As well as beautiful Son and other Cuban music, we have other ways to get everyone on their feet!
We aim to give you Scotland's Warmest Welcome too. Now we can guarantee it!
If you aren’t satisfied with MM’s warm welcome, please tell us.
You will get a further hug, kiss or handshake supplied pronto!
Beach Lane Social Club is behind Portobello Police Station on Portobello High Street. Lots of buses. See below for street level Google photo route (Beach Lane turns left before Ramsay Place tenements). Park on or off the High Street. For more maps, click here.
